Colapietro's Fake Air Bag and Gas Price Posting Bills Become Law

Bills dealing with unfair trade practices, standards earn Governor's signature

State Senator Tom Colapietro (D-Bristol) today announced that two bills which he co-sponsored and shepherded through the legislature during the 2006 General Assembly session became law yesterday after being signed by Governor M. Jodi Rell. Both the bills dealing with the sale of fake air bags, and the posting of gasoline prices originated in the General Law Committee--of which Sen. Colapietro is the chair--and deal with unfair trade practices and the standards which consumers can expect from retailers.

"The General Law Committee is such a fulfilling assignment because of the depth and breadth of the issues with which we deal," Sen. Colapietro explained. "The fake air bag bill is such an important safety measure and with gas prices constantly on the rise, the least that a consumer should be able to expect is a fair and accurate listing of the price she or he will pay at the pump."

P.A. 06-25 prohibits the sale of any device intended to replace a motor vehicle air bag if the seller knows that it does not meet federal safety standards. Any person who is found to have knowingly sold a fake air bag commits an unfair trade practice and is also guilty of a class A misdemeanor, punishable up to one year in prison, a fine of up to $ 2,000, or both. P.A. 06-25 becomes effective on July 1, 2006. P.A. 06-29 makes it an unfair trade practice for gasoline retailers to fail to comply with the law requiring them to display, in the same manner, size, and print the prices for the public and members of a club, retail membership organization, or people who qualify for a special discount, on each public gasoline price sign. P.A. 06-29 became effective yesterday.

"The unanimous passage of both these measures in both chambers of the General Assembly sends a clear message to those people who may be sacrificing safety in the name of a sale, or who may be trying to increase their profit at a time when gas prices are already too high," Sen. Colapietro explained. "These laws will help to protect the average consumer in this state."

Sen. Colapietro serves the 31st Senatorial District communities of Bristol, Harwinton, Plymouth and Plainville.

Mediation may not be the most appropriate avenue for resolution in all cases.

For example, it may not be appropriate in cases where: A definitive or authoritative resolution of the matter is required; The matter involves or may bear upon significant questions of Government policy that require additional procedures before a final resolution may be made; Maintaining established policies that apply to many people is especially important; The matter significantly affects persons or groups who are not parties to the process; A full public record of the proceeding is important; or The agency must maintain continuing jurisdiction over the matter with authority to alter the disposition of the matter in light of changed circumstances.
